Natural Habitat: Dry to moderately moist sites including grasslands, open prairies, foothills, forest edges, open woodlands, and roadsides. Common across much of Montana in well-drained soils and open, sunny conditions.

Soil Preference: Adaptable to a wide range of soils, including sandy, loamy, and rocky soils. Performs best in well-drained soils but tolerates moderately moist conditions.

Minimum Annual Precipitation: 12 - 20 inches
Drought Tolerance: Moderate to high once established
Disturbance: Establishes readily in disturbed areas such as roadsides, clearings, and restoration sites, while also persisting in stable grassland and open woodland communities.
Potential Pests/Disease: May be susceptible to powdery mildew, particularly in humid or poorly ventilated sites. Generally low pest pressure in native, well-drained conditions.
