MITOSIS- Montana Interagency Tree Or Shrub Improvement Study. This study was a cooperative effort to evaluate the performance of various species of plants in established Montana plantings. The selected plantings were evaluated for over ten years and the best performing plants were selected for seed orchard establishment at the nursery.
Native to: Eastern to Midwest U.S.
Natural Habitat: Moist or dry open forests. Old fields, canyons, floodplains, and lower riparian slopes.
Foliage: Turns red/yellow/orange in the fall and drops. Produces black/purple colored cherries.
Flowers/ Fruit: White (April - May)
Light Requirements: Full sun to shade
Growth Rate: 2 ft. per year
20-year height: 30 ft.
Elevation Range: 2,000 - 4,500 ft.
