Spiraea splendens
Natural Habitat: Montane to subalpine meadows, forest openings, moist slopes, streambanks and avalanche paths
Foliage / Flowers: Deciduous shrub typically 2-4 ft tall with upright to mounding form. Leaves are oval to wedge‑shaped with fine serrations. Bright pink flower clusters bloom in mid to late summer.
Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade
Growth Rate: Moderate
20-year Height: 3-4 ft
Elevation Range: Common from 3,000-10,000 ft depending on climate
Cold Hardiness: USDA Zones 3 to 7
Fire Tolerance: Moderate, may resprout from root crown after fire
Wind Tolerance: High, adapted to exposed high-elevation sites
Soil Preference: Moist, well‑drained loams, tolerates rocky or gravelly mountain soils
Alkali / Saline Soil Tolerance: Low
Life Span: Often 20-40 years
Minimum Annual Precip: Performs best with 18-30 in of moisture or maintained soil moisture
Drought Tolerance: Medium once established
