Natural Habitat: Grows on river/streambanks, lake shores, and in riparian forests, swamps, and wetlands throughout western and south-central MT.

Foliage/Flowers: Green leaves that turn brown and drop in the fall. Flowers are catkins and non-showy. Produces small cones.

Light Requirements: Full sun to part shade.

Growth Rate: 2 ft. per year.

20-Year Height: 20 ft.

Elevation Range: 2,000 ft. to 6,000 ft.

Cold Hardiness: Zone 2 - 6.

Wind Tolerance: High.

Soil Preference: Loamy, clay, heavy clay, nutritionally poor, acidic, neutral, and alkaline soils.

Alkali/Saline Soil Tolerance: Moderate.

Life Span: 30 years.

Minimum Annual Precipitation: 20 in.

Drought Tolerance: Low.

Windbreak Spacing: Not recommended for windbreaks.
